In shortAn SMD screen is a digital LED display made from tiny surface mounted diodes. This guide explains how it works, how it compares with LCD and DIP screens, and how to choose one in Pakistan.
If you have seen a bright moving advertisement on a building in Multan or a giant screen at a wedding, you have seen an SMD screen. They are now the standard for digital advertising in Pakistan, yet many buyers are not sure what the term actually means. This guide from Adview Digital Advertising CO. explains it in simple words.
What is an SMD screen?
An SMD screen is a digital LED display made from modules covered with surface mounted diodes. SMD stands for surface mounted device. Each SMD package is a tiny square that holds three LED chips, one red, one green and one blue. By changing the brightness of these three chips, the screen can create millions of colours. Thousands of these packages arranged in a grid form the pixels of the picture.
How does an SMD screen work?
An SMD screen is built in layers that work together:
- LED modules. Small boards, often 320 by 160 millimetres, covered with SMD LEDs.
- Cabinets. Metal frames that hold several modules, power supplies and a receiving card.
- Receiving cards. Small processors in each cabinet that tell every LED what colour to show.
- Sending card or controller. The brain that takes video from a computer, USB or app and sends it to the cabinets.
- Power supplies. Convert mains electricity into the low voltage the LEDs need.
The controller refreshes the image hundreds or thousands of times per second. A high refresh rate, such as 3840 hertz, makes video look smooth on camera without flicker lines.
SMD compared with DIP LED screens
Older outdoor screens used DIP LEDs, where each colour was a separate bulb pushed through the board. DIP screens are very bright but have narrow viewing angles and uneven colour mixing. SMD combines all three colours in one package, which gives smoother colours, wider viewing angles and sharper images. That is why almost every new screen installed in Pakistan, indoor or outdoor, is SMD.
SMD screen compared with LCD screens
| Point | SMD LED screen | LCD screen or LCD wall |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Any size, from a few feet to entire buildings | Fixed sizes, joined with visible bezels |
| Brightness | Very high, readable in sunlight | Lower, mainly for indoor use |
| Outdoor use | Yes, with weatherproof cabinets | Very limited |
| Repairs | Replace a single module | Replace the whole panel |
What does pixel pitch mean?
Pixel pitch is the distance between two pixels in millimetres. P2.5 means 2.5 millimetres, P8 means 8 millimetres. A smaller pitch packs more pixels into the same area, which gives a sharper picture for people standing close. A larger pitch costs less and is ideal for screens seen from far away. As a simple rule, the best minimum viewing distance in metres is roughly the same as the pitch number.
Where are SMD screens used in Pakistan?
- Roadside billboards and building facades, usually P8 or P10, see outdoor SMD screens
- Shop fronts and plazas, often P4 or P5
- Showrooms, malls and restaurants, often P2.5, see indoor SMD screens
- Boardrooms, studios and control rooms, P1.5 or P1.53, see SMD video walls
How to choose the right SMD screen
Start with three questions: where will the screen be installed, how far away will most people stand, and what content will you show? These answers decide indoor or outdoor, the pixel pitch and the size. Then look at quality factors such as brightness, refresh rate, cabinet material, power supply brand and warranty. Our SMD screen price guide for Pakistan explains how each factor affects the cost.
